Why we evolved to dream: the new understanding

Joe Griffin explaining the psychology and biology of the expectation fulfilment theory of dreaming.
Why do we dream in metaphor? What does dreaming do for us? What would happen if we didn't dream in metaphor? What happens in our brains when we dream?

SPEAK UP BIIIITCH!
What a load of crap!
Very interesting theory. But don’t take this as a clean cut answer to why we dream. There wasn’t very much empirical evidence provided. Not really their fault, it’s hard to have empirical evidence when it comes to dreams. About the closest you will get is information on what area of the brain fires when a dream occurs. We really don’t even know why we need sleep, people just assume it is for rest. But our body is very active while we sleep. Also, the moon has nothing to do with it…
remember when i was a child i could controll the whole dream. was kinda awesome tbh:) i could actualy get whatever i wanted ect
you should record what phase the moon is in that night, you can cross reference to see how the moon effects you and your dreams
I barely actually concretely dream. Sometimes I do, most of the time I do not really, and my friend most of the time considers me as being a relaxed dude
Awesome video!! One question tho:
1.) So in a hypothetical situation where an individual has absolutely no level of stress, or emotional arousal that needs to be deactivated, then would there still be a need for the human body to dream? Or more realistically, would people with less amounts of stress dream less?
Also, at 9:13, how does the Talamus have any idea what to expect if the ONLY info its getting is that “something” really important is happening? No senses to rely on for info or anything..just a signal.
And after recieving the orientation signal from the Pons, why does the Talamus send signals having to do with unfulfilled expectations to the Cortex rather than any other information. Pons must send more info w signal
Im no expert in this subject matter im merely trying to understand your ideas.
Very interesting perspective on the causes and occurences of dreams. I suppose this is why people dream about something that’s going to happen and it usually works out that way because your brain has already found patterns and it’s just matching possible future events with past knowledge of sequences of events.
<3 scots. Long live the red beard!
very interesting learnt a lot from this video
We were really created to to be able to dream!
The problem I see is as follows. Many people have been successfully psychoanalysed and lead happy and successful lives but they will not discuss the analysis because it is counter productive to them (people will think that they were sick or weird to go into analysis, so why tell people).
And almost invariably, every single one of those successful cases successfully used dreams at some stage in the analysis. The mind is complex and so it is not possible to give a simple reductionist theory.
Informative and Understandable video . . . About what you said in 4:10, is it of any harm to keep a dream journal? I dream every night and since Oct 2008 i’ve been keeping a daily dream journal, fairly detailed. . . so far i have about 40 pages (typed, 12 font) of dreams. I keep them just so i can keep track of what my unconscious ideas/thoughts were and also to see any long term pattern or re-occurrences. . . also, because of my ‘good’ memory, it helps me remember what events are real and fake
