Why You Should Dream

People spend a large percentage of their lives sleeping. During this time, most people accomplish nothing. As a result, approximately one-third of a person’s life is wasted. This would not occur if people would take advantage of the phenomenon that occurs while they lay dormant in their beds. The phenomenon is none other than dreams, not aspirations or wishes of one day changing the world but visions in one’s head while they sleep. Few people realize the significance of dreaming. In fact, some even believe that they do not have dreams. The truth is, everyone dreams, no matter their sex, age, religion, or background. Unfortunately, few people care enough to remember them on a regular basis. The reasons people do not pay much attention to them are the following: they do not understand what dreams are; they do not know the opportunities that dreams offer; and more importantly, they do not recognize their true potential in the dream world and how it can be carried over into the real world.

The dream world is a recreation of how we see the real world in our subconscious mind. Dreams are a direct reflection of the accumulation of our experiences. They are the results of our knowledge, thoughts, feelings, fears, and hopes, thus as we change so do our dreams. This personal aspect makes it impossible for two people to have the same dream. It is possible for one to have reoccurring dreams or for two people to have similar ones but not identical. Just like every person is unique, so is every dream.

People use many things that are detrimental to their health for the sole purpose of getting away from reality. Drugs, unsafe sex, and alcohol are the most common examples. Unfortunately, most of these people overlook the wonderful, healthy and natural break offered by dreams. Dreams can provide an escape from reality when life is just too much to take. While dreaming, the body and mind can rest and one is temporarily freed from all of one’s problems. In a dream, one can go to Mars and meet a new race of intelligent life-forms or even travel through time. Anything and everything is possible in the dream world.

While it is true that almost anything can happen in a dream, one does not have to stand back and simply observe. While dreaming a person can make decisions as clearly as he/she could in the waking life. This can be accomplished by realizing that one is dreaming, leading to an enlightenment that allows the dreamer to then take full control of the dream. This technique is called lucid dreaming. Like all good things in life, learning how to lucid dream takes time and dedication. Sadly, many people are oblivious to the fact that such a thing is even possible. While lucid dreaming, the mind is active and one can actually achieve something, making sleep a productive activity. In the dream world, one can do anything, restrained only by one’s own imagination. There are no repercussions in the dream world because one is not restrained by politics, laws, social systems, or even the laws of physics. One is capable of flying, discovering new places, facing one’s fears, or simply analyzing one’s life. A person can even visit Las Vegas because what happens in the dream stays in the dream. If one truly feels that dreams are an important part of life, then one is more likely to remember one’s dreams. This allows a person to have great memories and experiences, making the dream worthwhile and even giving him/her something to look forward to at night.

People’s lack of knowledge on dreams is reflected by their indifferent reaction towards the subject. If they knew the truth they would be interested in the endless possibilities offered in dreams. For the lucky few who understand the magnitude of this experience, it is important to understand that dreams are not meant to replace the real world, but rather to serve as a getaway and a motivation to better one’s own life. Do not dream away your life, but rather strive to attain the glory in your dreams and carry it with you into the waking world.
