Lucid Dreaming Techniques That Make You Control Your Dreams

Article by Karen Winton

You may not know this but you can actually control your dreams, in other words, have lucid dreams. You have to use the power of your brain to be able to do this. In this piece you’ll find lucid dreaming techniques that help you take control of dreaming.

Once your body starts entering the REM sleep stage and your mind is still conscious, you will have the ability to control your dreams. If you have lucid dreams, or engage in astral projection, you need not worry about nightmares as you can turn a bad dream into a good one. You can also have fun using the power of your brain as lucid-dreaming can make you fly in your dream, go someplace magical, and so on, which you cannot really do when you are awake. Here are some of the basic lucid dreaming techniques that must be done by people who wish to experience astral travel or ‘dreaming lucidly’:

1. Positive thinking is important

If you think negatively e.g. you don’t believe the above mentioned process is possible, it will really be impossible for you to control your dreams. You have to believe that you can really dream in a lucid manner if your goal is to have lucid dreams. In the event you don’t believe or you only have a weak belief system, you must strengthen your belief or make the necessary changes.

2. Increase your ‘power of recollection or recall’

A power of your brain that you should make use of and is part of lucid dreaming techniques is easy recall. You have to remember what took place in the dreams you had if you wish to eventually take control of dreaming. Some people find this easy, but, if you are one of those people who don’t, and you really desire to control your dreams, do not worry. There are some tips and tricks you can try to increase your recalling ability or skill.

If you wish to have lucid dreams, for instance, you have to think about whether you dreamt or not as soon as you wake up. Do not immediately think about what you’re going to do for work, or what you’ll say to a friend, and so on, as soon as you’ve awaken. Instead, utilize the power of your brain for recalling dreams or for dream recollection by immediately asking yourself whether you were able to dream – if you did, think about the things that happened, who may be in the dream, what you were feeling, and so forth.

Included in the list of effective lucid dreaming techniques you can apply is to also try one sleeping position after another e.g. for instance, if you woke up sleeping sideways, remain in that position for a few seconds while trying to recall your dream, and then, if you still can’t remember, switch positions e.g. lie in a supine position, and again, try remembering. Experts say that the actual positions you had while you were into REM sleep can help increase your memory of dream events.

3. Make a habit of keeping a journal of dreams

To have lucid dreams, another important technique is to keep a journal where you can jot down information about the dreams, what you remember, and the like. This can also help you see the pattern in dreams or make you more familiar with what you frequently dream about. Having a journal and writing pertinent information regularly in it will help improve your recall and of course help you find lucid-dreaming easier.

These are a few of the most important lucid dreaming techniques that should be employed by people who are interested in controlling dreams, having better dreams, etc.

How to Have Lucid Dreams and Change Your Destiny

Lucid dreaming may occur intentionally or quite by accident. Many often have a lucid dream by accident and realize they can control the destiny of their dreams. A lucid dream occurs when the dreamer realizes he's asleep and dreaming and takes control of the dream. It may be to solve a problem in waking life, control a problem within the dream or simply direct the dream to an enjoyable experience. Athletes, actors and dancers often practice their avocation during a lucid dream.

Everyone has had a lucid dream at least once in a lifetime. Some people learn very early that they can control their dreams and later use them for problem solving, control of nightmares or visualizing a course of action for the next day.

One subject realized early in life there was a possibility of lucid dreaming. As a child, a reoccurring nightmare plagued her when she slept. One of the nightmares involved a scene from a battleground. Hundreds of people, men women, children and babies were trying to escape the battlefield but they had to climb a steep icy slope to get to safety. Night after night, she watched in her dream as people would almost reach the top and slide back down the slope to the bottle. She'd awake in tears, beads of perspiration speckling her forehead as she saw babies attempt to climb to safety and slide back down to the abyss of danger as their parents, grappled and ended in the same fate.

After almost a month, she decided to create an ending for the dream that saved the people. Up until that time, she was the omniscient viewer. Now, it was time to take an active participation in the dream. The dreamer created an ending to her dream. One where she joined the people, had planes awaiting that dropped lines to pull the people up and away from the war. She actively participated in the dream and after several nights, the nightmare no longer occurred. At that point, she learned to control other nightmares she had and eventually use dreaming as a problem solving method.

Most people don't record their dreams immediately upon waking. By the time they've had their morning shower, most of the details of the dream are fuzzy at best. People who use lucid dreaming as a method of solving problems, however, are different. Often they implant the problem in their mind before they go to sleep and tell themselves they'll find an answer.

They direct their dreams to the problem at hand; look at the solutions provided in their subconscious and upon awakening, immediately record the results of a dream. While the first attempt may not bring an immediate solution, it often brings them closer to their goals. The dreamer may not control the dream but simply watch, fully aware that it's a dream and use the information during the waking hours.

Lucid dreaming can occur without previous training. At some point in the middle of the dream, the lucid dreamer suddenly realizes he or she is in a dream and there's nothing to fear. From that moment, the nightmare ceases being scary or the pleasant dream becomes even better. People learning new physical or mental skills often use lucid dreaming to practice routines, learn the material or solve problems they couldn't during waking hours. It is a tool everyone, with a little practice, can use to improve his or her life.

Do dreams really mean anything?

Question by mattb77: Do dreams really mean anything?
I've been looking into the study of dreams a little, and when comparing it to some of my dreams it seems to make sense. However, on other occasions I can't possibly see how they could mean anything ( ie. one of my latest wacky dreams, cylons invading atlantis which just happens to be my grandfather's garage, with teenage Salim from the
new movie "slumdog millionaire" being there too)

so my main question,
is there any proven scientific link Between your dreams and your emotions, feelings or personality?

I deliberatly hav'nt catogorized this in "social science>dream interpretation" as I fear it may be a little biased on the subject, so I'm trusting you in phycology/biology not to be biased either.

I think some do and some dont. Silly pointless dreams are just your subconscious playing back some of the things it has stored and just being imaginative and creative and letting itself just be silly and wild. Even in those dreams tho, there's usually at least a little something that has meaning. Other dreams have really deep meanings. Usually your subconscious is worried about something that you haven't quite consciously come to realize and is just playing something out. There are websites and books out there that can give suggestions to what some dreams, places, objects, people in your dream might be representing.

Dream Interpretation of Places in your Dreams [part 2]

In our waking life, we go to places for a reason. We go to the cinema to watch a film (and possibly to hold hands with our date), we go to the park to take the day off and play a ballgame with friends (or ogle good-looking people), we go to the beach to dig our toes in the sand and take a dip in the waters (or again, ogle good-looking people). There is always a reason, one way or another.

In these days of busy lifestyle, few of us waste time going to places where we have no business. Which is why we should be thankful that when we dream, we have the luxury of going to places we have never been before.

And, just as in our waking life, it follows then that the places we go to in our dreams have an underlying meaning as well. Below is part two of dream interpretations of venues you find yourself in during your sleep.

Desert

Ordinarily, deserts are barren and lonely places. In a dream, they imply a state of being lost and wanting to arrive home or be found. But the great spaciousness and emptiness of the desert landscape can also be beneficial; it signals a silence and meditation your life may be needing.

Airplane

Airplanes symbolize flight, freedom, and escape from the mundane. So if you dream of being in an airplane, whether or not you have a fear of heights, it just means you need to face those fears of the unknown and be thankful for their possibilities. If you dream of being the pilot, then this is a good sign: it is an undertaking and journey which you have taken complete control of.

Backyard

Backyards are fenced-in spaces outside our houses which we don't want neighbors to see, or intruders to trespass. Thus, to dream of sweeping in a backyard, for instance, means you want to cleanse that part of you which you fear is laid bare to the public.

Bridge

Crossing a bridge means an inevitable transition in your life, a shift in lifestyle, belief, location, relationship, etc. Observe the sturdiness of the bridge, or if it shakes under your weight. Also, look at the water below if it's calm or treacherous, or if it is an abyss instead. All these are signs of your readiness to cross over.

Church

Church are obviously holy places, which in a dream means you are reevaluating your life and want to lead a more spiritual one. Dreams of being inside a church always is a sign of good luck. An alternative interpretation is that you are questioning authority in your life, as churches and religion in general operate on authority.

Kitchen

Kitchens in dreams evoke either hunger, not just for physical nourishment, but spiritual as well. If you dream of yourself cooking in a kitchen, filling the room with a warm, inviting aroma, it just means you are taking an active role in your life.

Hell

We all have our personal versions of hell, and it does not necessarily have to be the commonly-thought of underground place with burning sulfur and demons with spears. If you dream of being in a hellish place, you could be feeling guilt from a sin you may have committed, or else, it is a premature punishment you are imposing on yourself, even if you haven't really done anything wrong in the first place. Hell is a place of self-censorship, so take it easy on yourself.

Hospital

It depends whether you are the one confined in a hospital, or you are only visiting a sick friend. Hospitals in dreams are signs that make us aware of our mortality, and of course, our health. Also, a sense of authority and properness operates inside a hospital (uniforms, schedules, SOP's, dosages, doctor's orders, etc), and your little visit there in your dream implies a confrontation with authority you might be avoiding or looking forward to.

Field

Is it a barren field, or a lush green one? To dream of spacious fields imply a whole world of possibilities and potential for you, as if the ground is all prepared for new plantings. Then again, the saying “the grass is always greener on the other side” can also come into play here.
