Have you ever woken up from sleep, only to find that you couldn't move? If you answered "yes," you have experienced a phenomenon known as sleep paralysis (unless someone happened to bind your arms and legs while you slept, in which case, you have a whole other set of problems).

During sleep paralysis, you are completely unable to move your body. If you sleep on your back, you may feel as though there is something crushing your chest. You may feel an intense sense of fear or anxiety that you are about to die, or that you will be permanently paralyzed. But there is, in reality, nothing to be afraid of, as sleep paralysis is a natural part of the sleeping process.

Sleep paralysis can occur as you're falling asleep or as you're waking up. As you enter REM sleep, your body basically shuts itself down to prevent you from acting out your dreams and hurting yourself. Usually this paralysis wears off as you are waking up, but sometimes your brain will wake up before your body does, resulting in you not being able to move for several seconds to several minutes. Though this can be scary, it is completely harmless.

Several factors can contribute to experiencing sleep paralysis more frequently, including sleeping on your back in a supine position, irregular sleep schedules, taking naps throughout the day, stress, frequent panic attacks while awake, and sudden lifestyle changes. People who suffer from narcolepsy are also more likely to experience sleep paralysis. 

Another cause of sleep paralysis can be having a lucid dream just before the episode of sleep paralysis, especially if you try to awaken yourself from the lucid dream. In my personal experience, this is the most common cause. Sometimes when I realize that I am dreaming, I will try to wake myself up suddenly (since I find lucid dreaming boring and pointless. If I wanted to control what was going on in a dream, I'd just wait until I was awake at work or something and daydream about it). This apparently causes my brain to wake up before my body is ready to awaken. Since I know what is happening, I am usually not afraid at all.

Many people experience visual or audio hallucinations during sleep paralysis. You may also feel as though there is a "presence" or some kind of evil spirit in your bedroom with you. These kinds of hallucinations and delusions may account for many reports of ghost sighting, alien abductions, and experiences with incubi or succubi.  Many cultures throughout history have similar myths and legends to explain sleep paralysis, usually involving malevolent spirits, demons, or witches.

The best thing to do when experiencing sleep paralysis is to remain calm and remember that you are in no real danger. Remember that it is simply a natural process your body goes through in order to protect yourself during sleep and wait it out. If you find yourself in a lucid dream and attempt to wake from it, be prepared for the possibility of sleep paralysis. As long as you know what is happening, you should be able to get through the episode without too much fear. You can also try to move your hand or foot to attempt to break free of the paralysis sooner. Remember, it's better that you are unable to move for a couple minutes after waking up than to act out your dreams and end up wandering outside your house and into the road or something!

To minimize the possibility of experiencing sleep paralysis, it is important to get enough sleep, take necessary steps to reduce stress, exercise regularly, and keep a regular sleep schedule.

Lucid Dreaming and Sleep Paralysis

Lucid dreams of course are dreams that seem very, very more realistic than ordinary dreams, and in which one is consciously aware that they are dreaming. The more experienced one becomes at lucid dreaming, the better they can control it. Experienced lucid dreamers can make their dreams extremely realistic. Once you are able to control your dreams, you can of course ask to be taken back to a past life (if you believe in them) or event, current event, or future event. You can use lucid dreaming to help overcome your fears. Allow yourself to face your fears in a lucid dream. It's all your choice. The limit goes beyond the sky, it even goes beyond dreams. Some people are natural lucid dreamers, and some have to learn how through practice. As a natural lucid dreamer myself, I can't guarantee that my technique will help everyone learn, but I can give you an idea about how it can be done.

Firstly, every night before you go to bed close your eyes and say out loud "I WILL REMEMBER MY DREAMS. SOON I WILL BE ABLE TO CONTROL THEM". Then when you wake up the next morning the very first thing you should do is write down in your diary every single thing you remember about your dreams.. If you can't remember anything, don't be discouraged, you will eventually. Just remember a little bit at a time and after awhile you will start remembering more and more. You don't have to keep a dream diary forever, just until you start getting the hang of having lucid dreams. The more you can remember and analyze about your dreams, the better you can control them in the future.

One trick to do; and this is how I've had lucid dreams all my life, is wait until your day off when you can sleep in and don't have to do anything. Get a sleeping pattern down for 4 or 5 days and wake up the same time every morning. Then one morning, go to bed a couple hours later than usual, but set your alarm to wake you up at the same time as the prior mornings. It can just be for a few minutes and you can get a drink or watch tv or check email or something. Do this for about 15-20 minutes and then go back to bed and lie down on your back. MAKE SURE YOU STAY ON YOUR BACK! Start pretending that you're doing whatever it is you wish to lucid dream about, imagine you're with the people you want to be with. Try to make whatever you're imagining as clear as possible. Hear, feel, and even visualize that you're smelling something.. MAKE SURE YOU STAY ON YOUR BACK THE WHOLE TIME! Whenever you drift off to sleep hopefully you'll start dreaming of the things you were imagining about. When you're getting close to a lucid dream you'll start vibrating or pulsating a bit and you'll start hearing a buzzing noise.

Don't panic if you find that you're half asleep/half awake and can't move. It's a condition called sleep paralysis. If you panic it'll only make things worse and you'll start having a nightmare and you'll hallucinate that there's something (or someone) bad in the room with you. I don't know why this happens, but it can be scary if you don't stay calm. This is the down side to having strange dreaming experiences. I unfortunately first experienced this when I was only 6 or 7 years old. I "woke up" one night in my room and there was a man at the end of my bed pointing a gun at me. It was as clear and real as could be. Imagine a little girl "waking up" and seeing that. I wanted to run to my daddy but I couldn't move, thanks to the paralysis. Finally he "disappeared" and I woke up. My daddy of course told me it was just a dream and tried to make me feel better, but I spent years afterwards wondering if it was a ghost I saw that night. It wasn't until I got a computer later in life and learned that it was a condition called "sleep paralysis".

I experienced it several other times, but as I got older I learned how to either wake myself up from it, or turn it into a more pleasant lucid dream. I have always been fascinated by the Jack the Ripper murders, and I absolutely cannot read anything about the subject when it's close to bed time. I have had a few sleep paralysis experiences where I found myself his victim, and he was on top of me killing me. I would keep going back and forth between laying on my back on the streets of London to my bed. Of course it still wasn't as frightening as the "ghost man" I experienced as a child. I didn't start having the JTR experiences until later in life, when I had an idea that it wasn't real. Of course it does make me wonder if I had a past life as a prostitute in London, but I try not to think about it.

But anyway, don't be discouraged if anything like this ever happens to you. Try to remember that it's not real and concentrate on your breathing. Try to stay calm and close your eyes and think about happy things, there's a good chance that this paralysis incident will turn into a lucid dream. Remember to try staying on your back the whole time, and that the chance of having a lucid dream will increase on days you sleep in longer than usual.

Remember you can use lucid dreams for any purpose(s) you choose. Some people like to have fun with it. When you lucid dream, you are almost like a god and you have control over the dream world. Obviously the most common thing for lucid dreamers to do is to experience their sexual fantasies. Some people like to fly, some people like to pretend that they're a star on stage preforming in front of a large crowd. Sometimes it may not be until a middle of an ordinary dream when it becomes lucid. If it already a pleasant dream, you don't have to change it if you don't want to. You could keep on continuing with the same dream as an observer. Of course you can change things you don't like about it. It's all totally all up to you. Have fun!

If you’re new to out of body experiences and lucid dreams and you’re wondering where to get started, here it is. In this article you’re about to find out why sleep paralysis is the holy grail for new OBEers because it’s how you can access your subconscious without having to practice using any visualizations at all.

If you've ever woken up in the morning and found that you couldn't move or make a sound for a few minutes, you've had sleep paralysis. This used to happen to me and I had no idea why or what it was. But as it turns out, this was the trick that opened the door to frequent OBEs for me after having insomnia for years.

SLEEP PARALYSIS IS A PROTECTION MECHANISM

The question is "what is sleep paralysis and how can you use it?" Sleep paralysis is a protection mechanism your body uses when you fall asleep. If you were to dream you’re doing something very active, such as running, and you weren’t in sleep paralysis then you would move your limbs when you’re asleep and you’d wake yourself up. To prevent that from happening, your body disconnects your voluntary muscle system from your mind so that you can dream all you like without waking yourself up.

USUALLY YOUR MIND FALLS ASLEEP, THEN YOUR BODY

Normally you’re not aware that of this happening because by the time your body shuts itself down in sleep paralysis, your mind is already asleep and unaware of what’s happening. In other words you enter a state of ‘body awake/mind asleep’ before entering ‘body asleep, mind asleep’.

SLEEP PARALYSIS IS ACTUALLY A LUCKY BREAK

The whole trick to lucid dreaming is to enter a subconscious focus without losing awareness. Here’s how sleep paralysis does this for you.

SLEEP PARALYSIS AUTOMATICALLY PUTS YOU IN A SUBCONSCIOUS FOCUS

When you’re awake your brain is in what’s called a ‘beta’ state. Beta means your dominant electrical brain waves are oscillating at around 14 to 30 cycles per second.

When you enter sleep paralysis, your brain automatically puts itself in "dream mode" which is called a ‘theta’ state. Theta is slower than beta and is around 4 to 7 cycles per second.

Knowing this secret allows you to avoid one of the major mistakes most people make when first starting out in OBEs.

MAJOR MISTAKE! MOST  BOOKS SAY TO DO OBES IN ONE STEP

Most books on OBEs say to simply induce an OBE in what is basically a one step process. Going directly from a waking state to an OBE is possible but it’s difficult so this is not what I recommend you start out with.

TWO TRANSITIONS TO SUCCESS, NOT JUST ONE!

Instead, you’ll progress much faster by making it a two step process. You first use the sleep commands we’ll cover later to trick your body into falling asleep and enter sleep paralysis.

You then use exit techniques we’ll cover later to convert sleep paralysis into an OBE and separate from your physical body.

HOW MOST PEOPLE DISCOVER SLEEP PARALYSIS: BY WAKING UP IN IT!

Now, how do you do that? The way you’ll usually become aware of sleep paralysis is that you wake up in it and find you can’t move or make a sound.

Sleep paralysis often feels like there’s a heavy lead blanket on you. It’s not that there is really anything on you or that your muscles have become weaker. The feeling is because your brain has to send a stronger nerve signal than normal to get the same muscle movement. That makes it feel like you’re having to overcome some kind of resistance when you try to move.

This feeling also usually makes it feel like it’s harder to breathe but it’s actually a natural sleep process. Sleep paralysis happens every single time you fall asleep.

BUT... ISN’T THAT DANGEROUS?

You may be wondering if sleep paralysis is dangerous and if there’s a way to break free. Sleep paralysis is not dangerous because it’s something your body does every night. Plus, here is a secret "safety release" trick you can use to free yourself from paralysis so you always have a backup plan.

HOW TO BREAK SLEEP PARALYSIS 100% OF THE TIME: USE DEEP BREATHING TO CONTRAST SLEEP BREATHING

The only way your body knows for sure if your mind is awake is if you move. This is a problem when you’re in 100% sleep paralysis which is preventing you from moving. Luckily paralysis is limited to your voluntary muscle system like your arms and legs. Your breathing is semi-involuntary so you still have control over it even in deep paralysis.

If you enter sleep paralysis and decide you want break free and wake up, simply change your breathing pattern to something other than the sleep breathing pattern your body is in. The most effective way I have found to do this is to begin breathing deeply and slowly.

After 10 or 15 seconds your body will notice the change and bring you out of paralysis. Not many things are 100% reliable in lucid dreaming but this has worked for me every single time.

SLEEP APNEA

A very few people have reported that they woke up in sleep paralysis and noticed that they weren’t breathing at all. The problem is not the paralysis itself, but that they had an existing health condition called ‘sleep apnea’.

Sleep apnea basically means that you stop breathing when you’re asleep. So this is one of the side benefits of using sleep paralysis to have OBEs: you’ll find out whether or not you have sleep apnea.

Keep in mind there’s a big difference between the normal "heavy lead blanket" feeling that comes with sleep paralysis versus not breathing at all. If you find you stop breathing entirely then you may have sleep apnea and should see a doctor about it. If you only feel the heaviness sensation then everything is normal.

"ACCIDENTAL" VERSUS "DELIBERATE" SLEEP PARALYSIS

So far we’ve talked about the case where you somehow manage to wake up in sleep paralysis. However that’s basically an uncontrolled and accidental process. The question is what can you do to make it happen more consistently?

TOWARD CONSISTENCY:  WHAT IF THE BODY FALLS ASLEEP FIRST?

The idea is to flip the sleep order around so that instead of entering "body awake, mind asleep", you enter of "mind awake, body asleep".
When this happens you’re actually aware of the process your body goes through when it falls asleep. This is our main secret trick for doing visualization-free lucid dreams and O.B.E.s. This transition is the most important skill to learn in this part of the course.

Why? Because when you can put your body to sleep without losing consciousness at any point, you have 100% perfectly clear dream recall. This is called a "wake induced lucid dream" or WILD. It’s as easy to remember what you did in a WILD as it is to remember the last 15 minutes or so of normal waking awareness. With this method, you don’t have to think back through and hazy dream phase like you normally do with most dreams.

IF YOU ACTUALLY SUCCEED... WHAT DOES IT FEEL LIKE?

So what does it feel like to actually watch your body falling asleep?

Instead of waking up in sleep paralysis and with the heavy lead blanket feeling, when you induce paralysis consciously you actually have the sensation of the heavy lead blanket being laid on your chest. It often feels like it begins at your feet, comes up over your chest and ends at your head. When that process is complete you’re in sleep paralysis.

So how to get this process to happen consistently? Here is the key. And this one fact is so important and so critical that I'm giving it a big fancy name. It's called the "Fundamental Theorem of Sleep Paralysis".

THE FUNDAMENTAL THEOREM OF SLEEP PARALYSIS

The Fundamental Theorem of Sleep Paralysis is that if you wake up and fall asleep without moving at all, sleep paralysis becomes extremely likely.

SLEEP PARALYSIS IS MOST LIKELY WHEN THE BODY WAS RECENTLY ASLEEP

And when I say, without moving I mean you wake up and don't move your eyes, don't open your eyes, don't scratch any itches, you don't move at all in any way. The idea is that your body doesn't really know for sure if your mind is actually awake or not. If you don't give it any signals otherwise, it will assume that the mind really is still asleep and re-paralyze itself.

THE NEXT STEP: THE "STOP, DROP & ROLL" SLEEP COMMANDS

The foundation skill you need to develop this knowledge into a full-blown induction is to fall asleep quickly. So in the next section I'll show you how you can make your body first ask for permission to asleep and then I’ll show you how you can tell it "yes it's time to fall asleep". This trick is called the "stop drop and roll" sleep command and once you have it you'll never have a problem with insomnia again and you’ll dramatically accelerate your OBE progress.
